A WEEKEND AT WHAT IF ACRES

Winter plans.
One new puppy.
Plenty of detours.

Jeff chose a trailer for winter hay storage, brought home a new puppy and found Twizzler somewhere a goat did not belong.

01 / THE WORK BEHIND THE WEEKEND

A trailer for the hay,
less waste at the feeder.

Jeff settled on a hay-storage plan Friday: use the white enclosed SFF event trailer to keep roughly 100 bales under cover.

Jay had offered the trailer, and Jeff planned to help clean it out before bringing it to the farm. Hay could then be unloaded as needed. “Probably the best case scenario,” Jeff called it. With the trailer chosen, the next job was arranging the cleanup.

Saturday brought a trip to the feed mill for hay and grain. By evening, Jeff had replenished feed and water and raised the two grain bins on a skid.

He also fitted lattice ends to a feeder to keep more hay inside. Separate feeding spaces kept the goats out of the cows’ dinner. There was still work to do: Bibs had squeezed through a chicken opening Friday, and Jeff needed to narrow the gap. Straw, fresh bedding and preparations for freezing weather were also on his list.

02 / A NEW FACE AT HOME

Meet Libby.
Royce is adjusting.

Nine-week-old Liberty Bell, better known as Libby, came home Saturday and met Royce, her maternal uncle.

The family introduced the dogs outside on neutral ground. Royce stayed on a leash at first while Libby explored. About 20 minutes later, he was off leash and could walk away calmly when he wanted some space.

Libby’s water bowl produced the afternoon’s surprise. Royce normally drank from the bathtub faucet, but this time he drank from her bowl, much to the family’s amusement.

By Sunday morning, Jeff had good news about both dogs. “The new puppy is doing fantastic,” he said, and Royce was doing well too. Libby was going outside to use the bathroom. Her first evening had gone well, though the family had lost some sleep.

The cat room had
other company.

Twizzler got into the room being prepared for kittens Saturday evening. Jeff stopped to tell viewers what he had found, then worked on getting the goat back out.

A few minutes later, Twizzler was out and nobody was stuck inside. The kittens had not moved in by Sunday morning. Jeff was still preparing their space and considering a camera so viewers could check in on them. The room, he made clear, was meant for cats.

04 / AROUND THE MOO CREW

The Moo Crew has
a new meeting place.

“What If Acres, the Moo Crew” is the farm’s new Facebook group. Jeff introduced it Friday as a place for viewers to post pictures, share screenshots and talk with each other between livestreams. He credited Mary and Jay with setting it up.
